Pastel is the traditional medium of delicate design, limited palette, soft transitions, domestic subjects, and intimate scale. Cristina Grassi’s monumental pastels defy that tradition. She is a fierce colorist whose compositions are bold and inventive, dramatic, but at times whimsical. Object and background often seem on equal footing, transforming representational scenes into abstract arrangements of formal power. A vibrancy and energy inform all features of her pictures— whether still-life elements, people, animals, fabrics, or fantasy shapes. As the artist has written, ‘My works are breathing.’
