ERCOLE PROCACCINI, the YOUNGER
(Milan, 1596 – ca. 1676)

Angels in Adoration

Inscribed, upper center: Di Ercole

Red chalk with red wash on paper
6 ½ x 4 ¾ inches (16.5 x 12.1 cm)

Provenance:

Private Collection, USA.

This drawing is by Ercole Procaccini the Younger, who represents the final generation of painters in the storied Procaccini family. The son of Carlantonio Procaccini, Ercole was named after his grandfather (the founding member of the family dynasty) and greatly admired and emulated the works of his uncles, the famed Giulio Cesare and the well-known Cesare Procaccini.

Our drawing is a characteristic work by Ercole the Younger, whose loose style and quintessential blending of red chalk with red wash are on full display. In addition to several works in the British Museum, large groups of his drawings in red chalk are in the Ambrosiana, Milan, the Accademia, Venice, and the Uffizi, Florence.

the present work, framed and matted.
