This self-portrait of Burne-Jones quizzically peering outward is a charming example of the informal drawings that the artist drew for his close friends.  While similar caricature drawings were often included to illustrate the artist's letters (see below), this direct and humorous depiction of Burne-Jones, drawn on a separate sheet of paper, may well have been intended as a gift or memento of a meeting.
